IEMI's research unveils that furniture products are one of major sources of income from retail in Brazil.
The furniture retail sector represented 1.5% of Brazilian revenue during 2010 supplied mainly by the furniture industry. The furniture products were one of the main sources of income from Retail chains and department stores in Brazil. Last year, Brazil has consumed USD 14,784 million in furniture, according to Institute for Studies and Industrial Marketing (IEMI).
The large volume of Furniture trade sector contributed for the Brazilian trade surplus, according to Marcelo Prado, author of the "Furniture Brazil 2011" report. The study was produced by IEMI and released in early October with institutional support of the Association of Furniture Industries of Rio Grande do Sul (MOVERGS). According its report, more than 15,000 Brazilian furniture manufacturers have created 293 thousand jobs in 2010. With production of 44 million pieces the companies earned about USD 1.5 billion of which USD 770 million coming from exports.
Despite the Brazilian small share over international trade (0.4% of imports and 0.7% of world exports), the country recorded a furniture consumption per capita of USD 78, higher than global average of USD 63.
